Is Squarespace ‘Serious’ Enough for Your Business?

Let’s get into the nitty-gritty of Squarespace vs. WordPress.

"Is a Squarespace website 'serious' enough for my business?"

I hear this question a lot.

That’s why I talk about it a lot.

And I wish I could impart to you all my knowledge of building a website design agency exclusively in WordPress several years ago.

And then explain to you why now, I design in Squarespace.

Let's bust a few myths...

Myth #1: "WordPress is way more customizable than Squarespace."

Yes. It is.

No argument there. Anything you want to do online? You can do it in WordPress. Want your own social network? WordPress will do that. Want to create a quiz with cats? (That's a real thing.) WordPress is your only option.

But remember that all that customization comes with a COST. Every single plugin or line of code you add to customize your site MUST be maintained to stay secure and functional.

And if the team who built one of those plugins suddenly stops supporting it, or the coder who customized your theme ghosts you ... well, you're up the website creek and looking to pay someone else to fix it.

Contrast that with Squarespace…

1. Squarespace stays updated, functional, and secure all the time, without you or anyone you pay having to get in there and update things.

Your site won't break or go down because WordPress did another update and all your plugins are fighting it.

2. You have Squarespace Support at your beck and call. For no additional cost!

It's included in your monthly hosting (which is comparable if not cheaper than most high-quality WordPress hosting - think dedicated hosting, not GoDaddy). Got a problem? They're there to help you with it.

Okay, next myth ...

Myth #2: "WordPress is easier to design and work in than Squarespace."

Bah! Just kidding. No one's saying this.

On to the next one ...

Myth #3: "WordPress has cleaner code."

Okay, yes, while this is t e c h n i c a l l y true, it starts to fall apart when you install all those plugins we mentioned above.

A bare bones WordPress theme, without a ton of additional plugins, is going to be cleaner and lighter than Squarespace, which, again, is t e c h n i c a l l y better for SEO.

But ... is it though?

I'm going to take a stand here and say, "No."

I know too many small biz owners with two to three hundred thousand views a year who are on Squarespace. I don't think they're hurting by not being on WordPress.

So, that's my answer to your question about Squarespace. "Is it 'serious' enough for your business?" Well, are you serious about ...

  1. Attracting people who need your stuff and would love to work with you,

  2. Building a relationship with those people, and

  3. Getting them to sign up for or buy your stuff?

Then, yes! Squarespace is PERFECT for you! And it comes reasonably and without all the headaches, worry, and updates that WordPress comes with.
